1800-1850 Carved Coquilla Nut Flea Trap

1800-1850 Carved Coquilla Nut Flea Trap

55.25

A Victorian novelty. An intricately carved Coquilla Nut Flea Trap. In the 18th and 19th century flea traps were often filled with a few drops of blood, honey or resin, depending on your financial means. Supposedly, fleas attracted by the blood, would enter the trap and get stuck to the honey or resin. They were hung around the neck, worn in ladies clothes or kept in the bed. In excellent condition with a gorgeous use patina. Some cracking at the threads and the threads will strip and the two parts are not terribly secure, though they can be made tight enough for display. In other words, this may not work for your daily flea trapping needs, but it is a beautiful antique.
