16th Century French Wrought Iron Strong Box or Coffer

16th Century French Wrought Iron Strong Box or Coffer

Whether you call it a strong box, puzzle box, coffer, or a cashbox, this one is a beauty. Produced completely by hand in the last quarter of the 16th century, this item was probably blacksmith forged by French, German, or Flemish hammers. Based on other historical comps, French seems likely. All pieces are riveted together.

The box uses a two lock system to protect the goods with a spring loaded latch covering the keyhole. Deploying the latch requires use of the sharp tool against a hidden mechanism and then the lock is opened with the key. A spectacular box. Very competitive offers considered.

Dimensions: 5" x 5" x 7.5" (12.7cm x 12.7cm x 19cm)

Gauge of steel varies between 1.7mm x 2.2mm varying depending on what piece is measured.

Condition is outstanding and the lock is fully functional. Probably repair to the latch. Smooth pitting to the exterior which is age appropriate.
