Iron Strapped Wood Strong Box or Cargo Container Coffee Table Sea Chest

Iron Strapped Wood Strong Box or Cargo Container Coffee Table Sea Chest

1,600.00

Offered here is what I believe is an iron strapped cargo chest that may date from the 18th to mid 19th century. This item is made of a dovetailed dense tropical hardwood (teak?) and is strapped in numerous places with hand forged iron straps and rose head nails. The box has a nice iron latch that will take a lock to secure the box. The box has two iron handles at either side. There is a wing mounted to the back of the box. It is my understanding that this may have facilitated these kinds of chests being shipped agains the curved walls of a boat. It is in very good antique condition with a lovely mostly even patina. Lots of battle scars though. Makes for a very fine end table or small coffee table.

Dimensions: 17" tall x 20" deep x 26.5" long.

One board at the bottom has been replaced. Not noticeable unless you flip it over.
