1716 George I London Britannia Silver Porringer or Caudle Cup

Offered for sale is a substantial George I London 1716 Britannia Silver* Porringer in the Queen Mary style. Porringers, for porridge or soup, were first made in the last half of the seventeenth century. They differ from caudle cups in that the sides are straight and not curved. The acanthus leaf decoration is often seen on them as it is here. This silver porringer is fitted with two ribbed S scroll handles. This one has been designed and hand made in the typical Queen Anne style, with fluting and a shield. Hammer marks are evident. A touch larger than average. The decoration to the body incorporates a scrolling leaf and scale motif bordered ornate monogram circular cartouche to one side. Nicely hallmarked and with period marriage style initials on the bottom:

* Britannia Silver - The Britannia silver standard of 958 (95.84% of fine silver), denoted by the icon of the seated Britannia holding an oval shield. This was to indicate the slightly higher standard of silver from sterling silver standard of 925 (92.5% of fine silver).
