1745 Jacob Hurd Silver Porringer Boston

Important silver Jacob Hurd porringer (Boston, 1745). Dated multiple places with various dates. Circular, with openwork "keyhole" handle, the handle engraved 'C/ST to RL / 1852', marked on top of handle. Hallmarked HURD in scalloped cartouche. Porringer is dated 1757, but is documented to 1745 (reference French, 1939, #160). Former collection of Elizabeth Warren Mueller of New York.
Jacob Hurd, son of Jacob and Elizabeth Tufts Hurd (born in 1702 or 1703- 1758) and father to silversmith Benjamin Hurd (1739-1781) and grandfather to Benjamin Hurd, Jr. (1778-1818). He was the most important and prolific silversmith of his generation, producing over 500 objects. Hurd received many of the most important commissions for public presentation objects and was the favored artisan among Boston’s elite. In addition to his work as a silversmith, Jacob Hurd was prominent in the Massachusetts militia, serving initially as First Sargent of the Artillery Company in 1745 and late as Captain of a Boston company. His son Nathaniel Hurd (1729-1777) was also a silversmith and engraver, as was his son Benjamin (1739-1781).
Condition:
Repair to handle. Later mid-19th century and early 20th century engraving present. Couple small dings.
