1789 Antique George III Sterling Silver Salver by Elizabeth Jones Owned by Frederick Augustus Berkeley, 5th Earl of Berkeley

This fine antique George III sterling silver salver has a plain oval form on four outswept feet, in the classic English style with raised rounded borders ornamented with an impressive applied bead decorated rim. Marks for Elizabeth Jones, 1789, London, sterling silver. Research indicates that this was owned by Frederick Augustus Berkeley, 5th Earl of Berkeley.

The surface of the salver is embellished to the center with a period bright cut engraved crest depicting a two savages with clubs atop a shield with a number of fleur de lis motifs as well as lion heads. A monogram is made in elaborate text beneath a cornet. The motto is emblazoned in faded Latin on a banner at the bottom: "pauca suspexi, pauciora despexi" (translated: Few things I have looked up to, and fewer looked down upon).
