1834 Coin Silver Christening Cup of George Howland Chase by Samuel Ward & Obadiah Rich of Boston

$240.00
A fine 1834 sterling silver three quarter pint (12 ounce) christening cup by Samuel Ward & Obadiah Rich of Boston made of coin silver. This cup was originally gifted to George Howland Chase of Bedford, MA. George Howland Chase was born on 15 April 1834 at Salem, Essex, Massachusetts. He was the son of William Henry Chase and Elizabeth Howland. George Howland Chase came from a family of Massachusetts whalers. From there, the cup passed down through the next two generations for a total of three George Howland Chases (some of the biographies are linked in the photos).

Handsome with a plain stepped foot and rolled rim. Handle is cast of two pieces. Overall condition is very good and commensurate with age and use (i.e., a couple of small bruises). Stamped Ward & Rich Boston Beautifully handmade.

The partnership of Ward & Rich dates from 1832-35. Little of their silver is known today, but they produced the most important piece of Boston made silver of their era - the Daniel Webster Vase.
