1860 Burmese Silver Repousse Peacock Lidded Betel Box on Stand with Insert

This type of repousse box is often described as a lidded betel box on stand. The betel nut is a popular psychostimulant in Southeast Asia, and was often stored in these elaborate boxes. There are many small betel boxes that were produced i this region. This is not one of those. With its elaborate figural peacock finial, this box is sure to command the attention of anyone in the room. The box is decorated all over with peacocks. Shields are blazoned above each of the paw feet. Floral swags everywhere! It also has the scarce original stand upon which the box sits. Inside is the very scarce hammered silver insert as well which allows the box to be separated to two compartments. Boxes of this size were reserved for the extremely wealthy of the region and are difficult to find.
Engrqraved on the bottom, "ချမ်းသာပါသေ", which roughly translates to "Be rich and die."
This covered box was made entirely by hand in the 3rd quarter of the nineteenth century and hammer marks and other tool marks are evident. A tremendous number of hours would have been spent to make this beautiful piece of silver.
Weight is ~1,250 grams. Dimensions: 10" tall. This item is not hallmarked, but solid silver is guaranteed. Condition is very with a rich patina. Two small losses (maybe) on the wingtips of the bird.
