1900-1915 Sweetser & Co. New York City Sterling Silver and Jade Sugar Bowl

Sweetser & Co. was a New York City-based maker of fine sterling silver and gold items. This piece is a covered sugar bowl with multiple chinoiserie vignettes and a simple stepped foot. Pieces by this maker are quite scarce, perhaps owing in part to their short run as a company. The panels illustrate Chinese landscapes as well as prunus or cherry blossoms and a twisted pine bough. Possibly the best thing about this bowl is the finial on the lid which is a large piece of jadeite that these silversmiths definitely upcycled from a much older Chinese ornament. This hand cut jade ornament can be carefully removed from the lid and under careful observation can be seen to have holes that drilled at either side, probably so that it could be suspended on an elaborate Qing or older necklace. Really quite fabulous. Certainly very fine and one of a kind. Additional photos upon request.
