1904 Pure Silver Japanese Trophy Cup Goblet Koi Sterling (YARC)

$1,000.00
The Koi fish that swins up a waterfall becomes a dragon. A spectacular pure silver Japanese trophy cup with koi and waves motif. This has a round hollow stem and a simple but engraved stem. At the bowl, each of the five carp is different, assuming a different pose in the roiling water. The cup is marked twice, one the jungin pure silver mark and the other is the maker mark-- 鴻池流. Condition is outstanding with a very slight lean and a couple of scarcely noticeable dings. Best in show Japanese silver cups.

The engraving is elaborate and describes how it was given at the Spring Regatta of the Yokohama Amateur Rowing Club in their 1904 races. This particular cup as awarded for the "Club Fours", a group which included Gordon Kenderdine (136 pounds) at the bow. Gordon was subsequently killed in action in France during World War I, and eventually interred in Bochi, Hodogaya, in Japan near his family. In the no. 2 position was C L Timm (155 pounds), and then at no. 3 was O. Strome (195 pounds), and at Sir. was H A Poole (160 pounds) (later to be the managing director of Mosle & Co in Tokyo), and then at Cox. was A Nicolle (at 132 pounds). The weather was said to have been very sweet that weekend and despite a couple of other mishaps, this crew managed to come out ahead. During this particular race which was held on the second day of the weekend, it was said that some time was spent in getting the boats in line but at length they went off to a good start. Poole eventually won the race by about three lengths, and the time for the mile was 8.03 1/4.

YARC was founded on the folded former Barge Club and they were known to throw a Spring and Fall Regatta which were very heavily attended events that drew nearly every expat in Yokohama for the races and evenings filled with live music and dancing. By 1904, the club had well over 300 members and was running strong.
