C. 1835 Important Baldwin Gardiner Coin Silver Sugar Bowl New York City (1,000+ grams)

$1,800.00
Offered here is a very large important New York sugar urn by Baldwin Gardiner made of solid coin silver. It sits upon an oval pedestal that tapers to a banded skirt. This opens to the fluted bowl set between two ornately cast handles and two milled bands gadrooned with flower garlands. The lid sits comfortably atop the bowl and features a heavy cast finial and gorgeous repousse work. All is hand raised and built by hand with many hammer and tool marks evident on the inside and undersides. Indeed, it was a labor of love to make. Comfortably hold 7 cups of sugar or more. Baldwin Gardiner worked from 1827 to 1848 as a silversmith and merchant in New York City NY as B. GARDINER & Co, a fancy hardware and lighting store, which included a silver manufactory with a shop at 29 Maiden Lane. In 1836, he sold out his large furnishing warehouse at 149 Broadway to his former clerks, John Gardiner Brower and Charles Holmes Rusher. This sugar is stamped on the base: "B. Gardiner" in a serrated rectangular cartouche.

Condition is excellent with some small dents and dings, light surface scratching.
