C. 1875 Chinese Export Wine Cup or Chalice by Sheng Chang / Wang Hing 慎昌, Canton (166 grams)(8 ounces)

A ca 1875 wine cup by Sheng Chang (慎昌) and retailed by Wang Hing Cup with elegant repousse of magpies and chrysanthemums, acanthus leaves at the stem, and grapes on the stem. Age appropriate patina. Light surface scratches as you might expect from a wine cup of this age. This one goes right to the head of the table. In terms of the symbolism, the Magpie [Xique 喜鹊] in combination with chrysanthemum [Juhua 菊花] symbolizes the Chinese expression “ju jia huan le 举家欢乐”, best translated as “may joy come to the whole family”. Chrysanthemum [菊 ju] in Chinese symbolism is a morpheme with “举 ju”, meaning “whole”. The magpie [Xique 喜鹊] symbolises “happiness” [xi 喜], a synonym of which “huanle 欢乐”. Magpies in any Chinese allegorical combination would denote “coming your way”. Chrysanthemums are symbolic of the 9th month [autumn] and are generally associated with the number 9.
