The George and Ira Gershwin Japanese Export Meiji Pure Silver Cigarette Box

Box is a stunning Meiji Period Japanese wood-lined solid silver cigarette box. The box features a classic three-toed horned dragon in a menacing position. Along the four sides, there are irises growing from the banks of a rippling pond. The bottom is wood. A nice thumb catch opens the box smoothly. It closes nicely also. Overall, the box is in a very good antique condition with some losses to the delicate rim of the wood liner.

This box was recently purchased in California from a descendent of Ira Gershwin. The box had once been in the home of George and Ira Gershwin at 1021 N Roxbury Drive in Beverly Hills until the death of Ira Gershwin in 1983 at the age of 86. It then passed by descent and was purchased in 2022 by DC Silver. Provenance will be provided to the buyer. It appears that the unmistakable coils of the dragon on the box are just barely visible in the background on the piano of the Gershwins in the photo.

ボックスは、見事な明治時代の日本の木で裏打ちされた無垢の銀のタバコの箱です。ボックスには、威嚇するような位置にある古典的な3本指の角のあるドラゴンがあります。四方に沿って、波打つ池のほとりから菖蒲が生えています。底は木です。いい親指キャッチで箱がスムーズに開きます。それもうまく閉じます。全体的に、箱は非常に良いアンティークの状態にあり、木製のライナーの繊細な縁にいくらかの損失があります。
