1600-1620 Finely Cast Venetian Bronze Bust of a Cherub after Roccatagliata

$2,400.00
This diminutive sculpture, standing approximately 10 cm (4 inches) high, was originally conceived as a decorative door or furniture mount—a form popular in the workshops of Niccolò Roccatagliata (active 1593–1636) and his Venetian contemporaries. The bust captures the lively Baroque spirit of the period: the cherub’s head turns gently to one side, his hair rendered in soft, fluid curls, the features animated yet serene. The patinated bronze surface shows deep, even coloration with traces of old handling. The piece has been mounted on a modern ebony base for elegant display, a common practice for architectural bronzes of this type. Comparable examples are held in European collections and have appeared with dealers such as Galerie Noël Ribes (Anticstore) and Finch & Co., typically described as “Venetian bronze putto busts in the manner of Roccatagliata.” This example shows fine quality and good age, with the expressive modeling and tactile patina expected of early Venetian bronze work. Dimensions: approx. 10 cm H × 7.5 cm W (4 × 3 in.). Stand is 8cm more. Material: Patinated bronze (mounted on antique brass base) Origin: Venice or Padua, Northern Italy Date: Early 17th century (circa 1600–1620) Condition: Excellent antique condition; minor surface wear consistent with age; modern display base. A museum-quality early Italian bronze—beautifully cast, compact, and full of character.
