1675 / 1679 Charles II Sterling Silver Tumbler Cups Thomas Mangy York, England

$12,000.00
An exceptional pair of rare 1675 York cups. The cups feature canted sides heavily decorated with characteristic late 17th century repousse work and small chased and punched details. There are two engraveable reserves, one of which is engraved with the owner's initials of 'DB' and 'TT'. Flowers, fruit, and other foliage probably symbolizing abundance and fertility decorate the cups. based on another example that sold at Christie's and at Fellows, the cups were almost certainly made by Thomas Mangy despite not having maker marks. What is marked is an extremely fine date mark for 1675 (weak 1679 on the other) in the York dating scheme and a nice York city mark (partial). Near these marks on one is an engraved monogram of W/M, probably another owner's mark. Overall, a very rare cup of which a handful are known (see The Edith & Stuart Cary Welch Collection, Sotheby's, October 25, estimate: 4,000 - 6,000 GBP plus buyer's commission). Of the two cups, one is just slightly larger than the other. Condition: Excellent condition. Watertight. A fine finish, no major dents or other issues. Generally outstanding for age. Weight: 89 grams on one and 140 grams on the other Dimensions: 2" tall and 3.5" across Check out some of my other English sterling silver holloware here: https://www.etsy.com/shop/DCSILVERSHOP?ref=shop_sugg§ion_id=6409956 Or just browse around the shop! https://www.etsy.com/shop/DCSILVERSHOP
