1720 George I London Britannia Silver Caudle Cup by Jonah Clifton (252 g)

$2,500.00
A fine and particularly well-preserved early 18th-century English silver caudle cup by Jonah Clifton of London, hallmarked for 1720. Of classic George I form, the cup is generously proportioned with a broad, rounded body and two substantial S-scroll handles, retaining the restrained elegance characteristic of early Britannia-standard silver. The cup is marked beneath with the Britannia standard mark, lion's head erased, the maker's mark of Jonah Clifton (CL beneath a Tudor rose and crown), and the 1720 date letter E in shield. The crown portion of the maker's mark is somewhat rubbed, but the remaining marks are sufficiently clear to establish the attribution. The reserve is notably free of engraving or inscription, leaving the silver's original surface and form unobstructed. At 252 grams, it is a substantial example, and the condition appears exceptionally good for a piece of this age, with no apparent significant dents, splits, repairs, or excessive wear. Jonah Clifton was a London silversmith recorded from the early 18th century and is known for a range of high-quality Britannia-standard hollowware. His work is relatively uncommon on the market, making this an appealing example for collectors of early English silver, George I silver, and early 18th-century drinking vessels. A particularly attractive example of the caudle cup form, combining an important early date, a desirable London maker, Britannia-standard silver, substantial weight, and an unusually clean, unengraved presentation. Not watertight. has a pinhole.
