1741-52 George II Sterling Silver London Pounce Pot Sterling Silver with Armorial of Stag Head by Gabriel Sleath or George Smith

$395.00
A George II sterling silver pounce pot probably by Gabriel Sleath or George Smith III. Also engraved with an armorial stag's head. The pierced cover can be pulled off and the pot would have been filled with pounce, a fine powder, used to dry ink and to smooth rough paper made sometimes of cuttlefish bone. Of pedestal form and raised on a circular foot. In very good condition with moderate surface wear, commensurate with age. Rubbed, but legible maker mark. Free of any notable damage. Rare little item whose owner could probably be identified with some research. Hallmarked faintly to each piece with the distinctive cursive 'GS' mark. Dimensions: 2.5" tall. Weight: 38.3 grams Price is firm.
