$900.00
Offered here is a pair of cast arm sugar tongs with a classic 1760-1780 Irish cast silver sugar tongs. These are unmarked but have a lengthy engraving on the reverse: "Mary Arthur Fendall Harrison from her Great Grandfather General Robert Young". These are also monogrammed 'REY' (Robert E Young). Robert Young was a significant figure in American history. General Robert Young (1768–1824) had a distinguished military career, serving as an officer in both the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. During the latter conflict, he commanded the 2nd Brigade of the District of Columbia Militia. His notable contributions included participating in the defense of Fort Washington, engaging in the Battle of the White House (near present-day Fort Belvoir), and providing a military escort for acting Secretary of War James Monroe. In 1798, when President John Adams authorized the creation of the Provisional Army of the United States amid the Quasi-War with France, Young sought to further his military career. He, along with others, called on General George Washington to discuss a potential commission in the new army. In addition to his military service, Robert Young was a prominent figure in Alexandria, Virginia, where he was involved in mercantile activities and served as a captain in the Alexandria Dragoons during the late 18th century. His burial in Presbyterian Cemetery highlights his significant contributions, as he is commemorated among other veterans of the War of 1812. Robert Young played a significant role in escorting General George Washington during his final birthday celebration in Alexandria in February 1799. As the leader of the Alexandria Dragoons, Young, along with other cavalry officers, accompanied Washington into the city for the festivities. This event was notable as it marked Washington's last public birthday celebration before his passing in December 1799. Perfect patina. 55 grams, 6" Check out some of my other sterling silver flatware here: https://www.etsy.com/shop/DCSILVERSHOP?ref=search_shop_redirect§ion_id=7399760 Or just browse around the shop! https://www.etsy.com/shop/DCSILVERSHOP
