1770-1780 Elias Pelletreau Tablespoon, Northampton, NY Made for R / Z*S
$3,800.00
Scarce coin silver tablespoons with a mid-rib spines by Elias Pelletreau, (ca. 1770), long considered to be Long Island's most important silversmith (worked in New York and Southampton, NY) and a rival in talent to Paul Revere. He apprenticed with Simeon Soumaine, worked briefly in New York City, eventually settling in Long Island for the remainder of his career. Condition is good but these spoons have some right-handed bowl wear (hence the price).
Marked with the EP mark of Pelletreau. Mark is Mark Variant 3 (see reference: Failey, page 162)
These have an initial monogram on the back of the stem R / Z*S for an unidentified married couple. A note that was traveling with the spoons states the following: "These spoons were made by a silversmith named Elias Pelletreau (1726-1810). He lived in Southern Maine 1749-50. Lived at Southhampton in year 1750 (may have moved from Maine in that year). The initials are probably of a husband "Z", a wife "S" whose last name was "R", possibly "Robbins" since these were with my grandmother Davis' effect. Her name was Emma Irene Robbins who married Henry Davis. Full research on the owner marks has not yet been completed.
The tablespoons measures 7.75" long. 90 grams, the pair.
