1786 Benjamin Mountigue (Mordecai) London Set of 4 Sterling Tablespoons, Bright Cut 'Colquhoun' (227g)

$800.00
A remarkable matched set of four sterling silver tablespoons, hallmarked London 1786 and struck with the maker’s mark for Benjamin Mountigue (see also Benjamin Mordecai). Each spoon is crafted in the Old English pattern with downturned profile, measuring 9" in length, with bright-cut engraving in the Irish star pattern — a refined late-Georgian decoration. What makes this set extraordinary is its layered history: the spoons carry an original flowing cursive monogram “TLP,” consistent with 1780s style, and later elaborate presentation engraving reading “London 1800 / Colquhoun.” This engraving ties the set to the distinguished Colquhoun family, active in London at that time, most notably Patrick Colquhoun, magistrate and founder of the Thames River Police in 1800. The survival of all four together, retaining both the original monogram and later presentation inscription, is rare. These spoons weigh a substantial 227 grams combined and exemplify both the craftsmanship of late-18th-century London silversmiths and the social history of re-engraved family or presentation silver. Details: London hallmarks, 1786 date letter Maker: Benjamin Mountigue & Mordecai Old English downturned pattern, 9" long Bright-cut engraved with Irish star motif Original monogram: “TLP” in flowing cursive Later inscription: “London 1800 / Colquhoun” Weight: 227g (total for four) A fine opportunity for collectors of Georgian silver, presentation silver, or Colquhoun family items.
