1790 Saunders Pitman of Providence Coin Silver Tablespoon
$800.00
Well-preserved coin silver tablespoon by Saunders Pitman (1734–1804), active in Providence, Rhode Island. This example is executed in the plain Celtic Point form, with minimal ornament save for a period monogram LT in a provincial cursive script on the handle.
Pitman was among the most respected silversmiths in colonial Providence, producing silver from the mid-1750s until the end of the century. His work is today represented in museum collections, including the Met, Worcester Art Museum and the Cincinnati Art Museum. This spoon, with its simplicity of line and honest script monogram, offers a glimpse of the restrained elegance typical of early Rhode Island silver.
A scarce survival of late eighteenth-century Providence silver, suitable for both the serious collector and those drawn to the quiet dignity of early American flatware.
Length: 9.25"
Weight: 47 g
