1793-1797 James Byrne of New York Coin Silver Tablespoon (55 g)
$600.00
A handsome and substantial coin silver tablespoon by James Byrne, one of New York’s important late eighteenth-century silversmiths. This example is distinguished by its elegant Celtic Point form, further enriched by fine bright-cut engraving. The spoon bears the period monogram 'JCB' on the handle, neatly executed in cursive script.
Byrne is recorded as active in New York during the final decades of the eighteenth century, following his early career in Philadelphia. Spoons of this type, particularly in so generous a size, exemplify the refinement and craftsmanship of American silver in the Federal period. The present piece is notable both for its weight and for the crispness of its engraving, which remains clear despite the passage of centuries.
A fine survival from the early republic, this tablespoon would make an important addition to a collection of early American silver.
Marked J Byrne with an eagle mark.
Length is: 9"
Weight is: 55 grams
