1798-1805 French Sterling Silver Salt Cellar with Winged Sphynx Motif

A regal cut crystal and silver salt cellar inspired by the French campaign in Egypt. Condition is excellent. Made in Paris by an as yet unidentified maker using an ear as a mark. Recently recovered from a Chicago-area estate (Ex-Richard Fill collection). Egg and dart pattern at the rim. Lion feet. Standing cock in chamfered cartouche with 'A' and '1'. Also with the Middle Guaranty mark and '85'. Engraved 'scratch marks' at the bottom.
