1810 Simon Levy Sugar Tongs of Exeter, England - Sterling Silver (29 g)
$325.00
Exeter tea tongs by Jewish silversmith, Simon Levy, completely undecorated and in good condition. A rare and refined pair of George III period sterling silver sugar tongs, fully hallmarked for 1810 and bearing the maker’s mark of Simon Levy, one of the few documented Jewish silversmiths active in Exeter, Devon during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. These tongs exhibit beautifully simple grips, elegantly tapered arms, and a classic fiddle pattern—a restrained yet confident expression of early 19th-century provincial taste.
Weighing 29 grams, this is a notably substantial example, unusually heavy for tongs of the period. Pieces by Simon Levy are scarce, and this pair offers a rare opportunity to acquire a work by one of England’s few Jewish provincial silversmiths, who operated outside the dominant guild system. Perfect for collectors of provincial silver, Judaica, or those interested in the underdocumented narratives of English Jewish artisans.
Condition: Excellent. Light surface wear consistent with age. No monogram or removal. Hinge strong and original.
Length is: 5.5"
Weight is: 29 grams
