1812 George III Sterling Silver London Wine Coaster
$1,200.00
Fine 1812 George III English (London) sterling silver wine coaster pair with boxwood inset and a repousse floral motif and has a rubbed maker mark. The wood is notable for its smooth pale appearance and fine grain (a very tough wood). in the center of the wood is a gorgeous sterling silver button that is fixed through the wood to a silver nut on the bottom. This coaster was later augmented in 1850 by George John Richards to stand on raised feet and these added feet have Victorian marks. Great condition.
Both are stamped at the foot clearly for John & Thomas Settle, Sheffield, sterling, and 1812 and use the alternative Sheffield marks that were available to makers in Sheffield from about 1740-1850.
Gauge of silver is medium, but owing to the workmanship, it feels very sturdy-- 277 grams including the wood. Condition is good antique with some signs of old repairs as shown in photos.
6.25” in total diameter (~5" opening and 2.75" tall-- easily accommodating a magnum bottle.
