1818 George W. Riggs and Henry Griffith Coin Silver Teaspoon of Baltimore - Chisholm Family

A handsome Baltimore coin silver teaspoon by George W. Riggs and Henry Griffith, working in partnership from 1816 to 1818. Their collaboration was brief, and surviving examples bearing the joint mark are uncommon. This spoon, with its refined yet sturdy proportions, is engraved with the crest of the Chisholm family: a dexter hand holding a dagger through a boar’s head. The presence of the crest indicates commission for a member of the Chisholm family residing in Maryland during the early nineteenth century, when Riggs & Griffith were supplying the city’s gentry with domestic silver of quality and distinction. The spoon offers not only the crispness of early American coin silver but also a direct connection to one of Baltimore’s prominent silversmithing partnerships.
