1819–1838 Large Antique French Silver Shell and Thread Ladle GC (Key), Paris (243 g)
$1,200.00
This striking early 19th-century French solid silver heavy ladle features a classic shell-and-thread design, beautifully executed in substantial sterling silver. The piece is hallmarked with GC, a key with a star below, the maker’s mark registered in Paris, and accompanied by the Vieillard (1819–1838) assay mark, confirming its Parisian origin. On the handle terminal, a wide and prominent scallop.
Expertly crafted, the ladle displays a large, wide bowl with intricate thread detailing on the handle, characteristic of elegant French table silver of the Restoration period. The piece shows gentle, age-appropriate wear and a soft patina that highlights its authentic antique character.
The maker’s mark GC with a key and star is rare and appears on only a handful of pieces documented in Parisian silver sales, including the Rouillac sale (Lot 145, June 2020). This ladle is a fine example of the maker’s work, combining both artistry and function.
Length: 13.75"
Weight: 243 grams
Condition: Excellent antique condition; minor surface scratches and natural patina consistent with age. No repairs or structural damage.
