1828–1861 Set of Five Hyde & Goodrich American Southern Coin Silver Tablespoons – New Orleans, Louisiana
$850.00
A handsome set of five matching American coin silver tablespoons by Hyde & Goodrich of New Orleans, an important Southern silver firm with a long history in the city. The spoons are executed in the classic Fiddle pattern, a restrained form that became one of the most enduring styles of American silver flatware. All five retain their matching form and proportions and are engraved on the reverse of the handles with the period script monogram “JRD.”
Together the five tablespoons weigh a substantial 250 grams and measure approximately 8¼ inches in length. They remain in overall good antique condition, with the expected surface marks and evidence of use. One spoon has several dings to the bowl, but these do not detract significantly from the presentation of the group. The surviving period monogram adds an appealing element of ownership history and gives the set considerably more character than an otherwise unmarked group of early American flatware.
Hyde & Goodrich is an especially interesting name in the history of New Orleans silver, and matching groups of early coin silver flatware by the firm are increasingly difficult to find intact. This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a substantial group of Southern coin silver with its original period character preserved. Recovered from an old Austin family.
Condition: Overall good antique condition. One spoon has several dings in the bowl; all show normal signs of age and use.
Weight: 250 grams
Dimensions: 8.25"
