1830–1870 Henry Peat Buckley New Orleans Coin 8.5" Silver Serving Spoon — Monogram “MJK" (42g)
A well-proportioned American coin silver serving spoon, dating to the mid-19th century. Measuring 8.5 inches in length and weighing 42 grams, the spoon has a confident, functional presence characteristic of period silver intended for real service rather than display alone.
Henry Peat Buckley was an English-born silversmith and jeweler active in New Orleans from approximately 1842 until his death in 1903. He succeeded earlier firms in the city and operated for decades during a period when New Orleans functioned as one of the most important commercial ports in the United States. Buckley’s work reflects the practical, service-oriented character of Southern coin silver, produced for daily use in a market shaped by trade, mobility, and constant circulation. Buckley remains one of the better-documented makers working in the city during the mid- to late 19th century.
The handle bears a neatly engraved script monogram “MJK,” cut with a light, practiced hand. The surface retains an undisturbed, natural patina, with wear consistent with age and long use — no aggressive polishing or surface alteration.
New Orleans coin silver is notably scarce. Unlike the large northeastern centers, New Orleans supported a comparatively small number of silversmiths, working for a regional market shaped by port trade, custom commissions, and constant circulation. Much of the city’s early silver was lost to melting, climate, and repeated economic disruption, making surviving examples increasingly difficult to find. As a result, Southern coin silver — particularly from New Orleans — is underrepresented relative to its historical importance and increasingly sought after by focused collectors.
