1830 Cut Shing Chinese Export Silver Fiddle Thread Gravy Sauce Ladle (Canton China) (51 g)

A heavy Chinese export silver sugar tongs with bamboo motif. Well marked on the top as shown. Overall, well constructed simple piece in close to perfect condition with an outstanding finish. Minor superficial flaws commensurate with age and use. Good heavy gauge. Marked with correct pseudomarks for Cut Shing with the conjoined CS and other pseudomarks. Condition is excellent. 51 grams 6" in length. The fiddle thread pattern was popular in silverware from the late 18th century and became particularly prominent in the early to mid-19th century. In Chinese export silver, which catered largely to Western tastes, this pattern followed the general popularity trends of Western flatware styles. Chinese silversmiths began incorporating the fiddle thread pattern in the early 1800s as demand for Western-style table settings increased.
