1836-1847 Richard Mathews Coin Silver Dessert Spoon Charlottesville, VA

$350.00
An 1836-1847 Richard Mathews teaspoon of Charlottesville, VA made of solid coin silver. Handsome early fiddleback pattern with and downturned terminal. No monogram. Condition is good with minor overall wear from use such as a couple small dings and age-related patina. This is a light to average gauge and sturdy enough for use. A monogram appears to have been deeply worn or possibly effaced. A period letter shows that Mathews was involved in the clock, watch, and silversmith trade. He was buried outside of town in Greenwood. An 1841 letter owned by Lesser Books reveals that Richard Mathews was not only a craftsman but also a slaveholder involved in the trade of skilled enslaved labor, adding an important (sad) dimension to the biography of a relatively obscure Charlottesville artisan. Length is about 7 1/8" Weight: 24 grams Check out some of my other sterling silver flatware here: https://www.etsy.com/shop/DCSILVERSHOP?ref=search_shop_redirect§ion_id=7399760 Or just browse around the shop! https://www.etsy.com/shop/DCSILVERSHOP
