1839-1845 Artemus O Fairchild Wheeling WV Coin Silver Teaspoon Set of Twelve - Dr. James Tanner (220 g)

$1,400.00
1839-1845 Artemis Osgood Fairchild Wheeling, WV coin silver teaspoon set of twelve. It is very rare to find a full set of twelve coin silver teaspoons. Rarer still to find a full set from Wheeling, WV. And just miraculous to find that they belonged to physician and mayor "James Tanner'. These matching teaspoons are all engraved "Tanner" and bear the 'AO Fairchild' mark with the 'tomahawk' pseudomark. "Dr. James Tanner was of Irish parentage, and was born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1796. He settled in Wheeling about the year 1820, and shortly after married Deborah Graham, by whom he had a son and daughter. The son died when about fourteen years of age and the daughter married Hon. A. I. Boreman, of Parkersburg, and is still living. Dr. Tanner was regarded as a successful practitioner, passionate, warm hearted and devoted to his patients and friends. He was also public spirited, participating largely in the affairs of the city government, being at the time of his death, (which. occurred December 26, 1858) mayor of the city. He died at the age of sixty-two. Dr. Tanner probably did more hard, laborious practice, rendering the citizens of Wheeling more charitable and unrequited service, in the thirty-eight years of his practice than any other practitioner, and his death was deeply regretted by the community." Condition is very good, near mint. Some overall fine surface scratching. This is a light to medium and sturdy enough for use. Length is about 5.75" Weight: 220 grams [Reference: Hollan Virginia & West Virginia Silversmiths and Related Artisans to 1900] Check out some of my other sterling silver flatware here: https://www.etsy.com/shop/DCSILVERSHOP?ref=search_shop_redirect§ion_id=7399760 Or just browse around the shop! https://www.etsy.com/shop/DCSILVERSHOP
