1839 Maker 'AK' of Moscow, Assayer Nikolai Dubrovin, Silver Gilt Niello Cup Russian (78 g)
This superb Imperial Russian silver-gilt and niello cup, assayed in Moscow in 1839 by Nikolai Dubrovin, represents an early and highly desirable example of 19th-century Russian niello workmanship. Standing 2.5 inches tall and weighing 78 grams, the cup is beautifully balanced, with crisp details and a rich, even gilding.
The body is decorated with classic Moscow-school niello work, executed with the precision typical of the 1830s–1840s. The surface remains perfect, with no losses to the niello, no dents, and no repairs—exceptionally rare for a nearly 200-year-old piece.
The hallmarks include:
• Moscow city mark (St. George slaying the dragon)
• Assayer’s mark of Nikolai Dubrovin, active 1822–1855
• Date mark 1839
• 84 zolotnik standard
• Maker’s mark AK — a documented but still unidentified Moscow niello master active 1835–1849, known for high-quality niello work though his name has not yet been discovered.
Pieces combining gilt silver + early niello from this era are increasingly scarce, and examples with such clear marks and perfect condition are especially sought after by collectors.
A refined and historically significant small cup from the early reign of Nicholas I, ideal for collectors of niello, Moscow silver, or early 19th-century Russian metalwork.
