1844 John Samuel Hunt for Hunt & Roskell Sterling Silver Parcel-Gilt Rococo Victoria Double Salt – Putto in Repose – 708 g
$11,000.00
Honored to present this refined high Victorian sterling silver partial-gilt double salt crafted in 1844 by John Samuel Hunt for the distinguished London firm of Hunt & Roskell. The piece is executed in a richly modelled Rococo style, featuring twin shell-form reservoirs framed by sweeping scrolls, and surmounted by a gently reclining figural putto—each detail rendered with superb clarity.
The gilding remains remarkably lustrous, highlighting the shells’ interiors and select relief surfaces, while the exterior retains its original patina. The condition is splendid: crisp casting, full definition to the putto and scrollwork, no significant dents or losses, and the hallmarks clear and legible under the base.
The provenance of such pieces is well demonstrated by a comparable set of four salt-cellars by John Samuel Hunt (London, 1847) sold at Christie’s, which featured identical Rococo modelling and gilt interiors.
Christie's [Lot 573, Live Auction 15492 The Collector: Silver & 19th Century Furniture, Sculpture & Works of Art].
This double salt not only exemplifies the bold decorative language of mid-19th-century London silver, but also reflects the luxury of table service in the drawing-rooms of Britain’s elite.
All marks are proper London sterling silver marks with the Victoria mark, lion passant, leopard and year mark. ISH under crown for Hunt. On the bottom it is stamped with the retail mark of Hunt and Roskell.
Dimensions: 4″ × 4½″ × 6″; weight: 708 grams
