1853-1855 Washington Houston Talbott of Indianapolis Indiana Dessert Spoon Set of Six (168 g)
$750.00
Set of six American coin silver dessert spoons by Washington Houston Talbott of Indianapolis, Indiana, dating to circa 1853–1855. Each spoon is struck with Talbott’s early rectangular cartouche mark reading “W H Talbott,” a form associated with his mid-century Indianapolis production before later stylistic changes in his business.
The spoons are executed in a refined fiddle tip't form, a transitional decorative variation of the classic fiddle pattern popular in mid-19th century American domestic silver. Each handle is engraved in period cursive with the monogram “H,” the original household owner.
Talbott was an important Indianapolis silversmith and jeweler working during the early development of Indiana’s commercial silver trade, producing both retail and workshop silver during the 1840s–1860s. His marked pieces are increasingly collected as examples of Midwestern coin silver production outside the dominant East Coast centers.
A well-preserved and attractive matched set from a documented American maker, suitable for both collection and use. The set presents in very good condition, with crisp definition to the spoons’ forms and clear, legible maker’s marks.
Also see related sets offered: Duhme teaspoons found together and with the monogram 'GH'. And a further set of McGrew teaspoons engraved the same.
