1864 Gorham ‘Bust’ Medallion Coin Silver Gilt Ladle with Saxon Stag (219 g)

$1,600.00
A fabulous and scarce c. 1865 solid coin silver Soup Ladle in the 'Bust' pattern. This ladle is unmarked, but compares precisely to the two other known examples that are marked for Gorham. The ladle has a gently curving elegant square handle that springs from a stag's head atop a parcel gilt bowl. This finally terminates in a cube which is adorned by four Homeric portrait medallions. Surmounting the cube, the terminal is the bust of a woman, hair pulled back beneath a cap and diadem (the other known two examples have the busts of men). Elements of 'Saxon Stag' and 'Medallion' and so the ladle would happily join pieces from these patterns in addition to 'Bust'. I do not believe you can find this ladle available anywhere but DC Silver. The piece is monogrammed with a large Gothic 'J' on the reverse of the bowl. The entire provenance of the ladle is known and a number of documents exist that tie it back to a specific Massachusetts family and manor home. This information will be provided to the buyer. Dimensions: 13" Weight: 219 grams Price is firm.
