A rare and visually striking American silver gravy ladle in the patented Alonzo Hebbard pattern of August 17, 1869 (U.S. Design Patent No. 3,616).
The elegant terminal is formed as a sculptural fleur-de-lis rising from an architectural stem, a design which can be matched directly to Hebbard's original patent drawing. The handle retains the impressed "PATENTED" mark, further connecting the piece to the period of the patent's introduction.
Alonzo Hebbard (1827–1887) was a New York silversmith and prolific flatware designer whose work appeared throughout the second half of the nineteenth century. His designs were patented, assigned, and produced by some of the most important American silver firms of the era. This pattern is illustrated in William Hood's reference work Tiffany Silver Flatware 1845–1905 and represents a distinctive example of American Aesthetic Movement design. The ladle is a practical serving size suitable for gravy, sauces, dressings, or table service.
Condition is antique and honest. Light surface wear consistent with age and use. Please review photographs carefully and judge condition for yourself.
Length: approximately 8.6 inches
Weight: approximately 74 grams
