Gorgeous 1875 Gorham sterling silver 11" parcel gilt oyster ladle in the 'Blackberry' or perhaps 'Raspberry' (GS-172) pattern. Great piece of flatware in an exceptionally scarce more or less uncharacterized Gorham pattern! The characteristic of this pattern is the cast and applied boughs of berries applied on a stippled background. The stem and bowl are separated by a prominent cast ball. There is a palmette at the handle terminal. The bowl is multi-lobed and fans out with its beautifully hand chased details. This bowl design is seen in other rare Gorham patterns like "Japanese" and "Hindoo".
Stamped for 'STERLING' and Gorham. Beautifully monogrammed with 'JRM', 'MRJ', 'RJM' or whatever way you choose to interpret the three letters.
Condition is very good with slight wear to the gilding in the bowl and highly preserved detail to the cast berry applique on the handle (some examples showing much greater wear).
Dimensions: 11"
Weight: 160 grams
