Gorgeous 1875 Gorham sterling silver 11" parcel serving spoon in the 'Blackberry' or perhaps 'Raspberry' (GS-172) pattern. Great piece of flatware in an exceptionally scarce more or less uncharacterized Gorham pattern! The characteristic of this pattern is the cast and applied boughs of berries applied on a stippled background. The stem and bowl are separated by a prominent cast ball. There is a palmette at the handle terminal. The bowl is multi-lobed and fans out with its beautifully hand chased floral sprigs. This bowl design is seen in other rare Gorham patterns like "Japanese" and "Hindoo".
Stamped for British distributor, Barnard & Sons of London and with a date mark of 1875. Maker's mark is indistinct, but they are the only candidate with a quatrefoil cartouche of this nature in the correct time period.
Condition is superb with good gilding and highly preserved detail to the cast berry applique on the handle (some examples showing greater wear).
Dimensions: 10.25"
Weight: 110 grams
