$900.00
c. 1880-1910 small sterling silver double walled japanese wine cup in the iris (Hanashōbu) pattern by Yoshikatsu Kurokawa 黒川義勝 with working dates of 1867-1949. The pattern features gorgeous iris growing from water illustrated through the use of repousse and hand chased elements. The stands of flowers grow upon a hand hammered background which covers the entire remainder of the exterior of the cup in a stippled pattern. The insulating quality of the double walled design is ideal for white wine which needs to be cool and not yield too much condensation. This design also allows the intricate decoration while maintaining the elegant smooth interior and foot bottom. The cup is in good condition and is stamped for the maker in kanji and STERLING. This cup is perfect for someone who may enjoy a perfect glass of wine that isn't too large (4-ounce pour).
The Japanese iris (hanashōbu), carries a deep cultural and symbolic meaning. The iris is often associated with purification, protection, and strength due to its sharp leaves that evoke the shape of swords. Historically, it was believed to ward off evil spirits, and in some rituals, iris leaves were even used to create protective amulets.
The iris motif is frequently seen in textiles, ceramics, and other decorative arts, representing not only beauty but also renewal and vitality, as irises bloom in early summer and are tied to traditional seasonal observances. One of its most celebrated uses is in the context of the "Kakitsubata" (iris / 杜若 or かきつばた) motifs, which can refer to the famous poetry from The Tale of Ise or elaborate seasonal displays in gardens. When depicted in artistic works, it often conveys grace, elegance, and the transition between spring and summer.
