1880 Gorham Sterling Silver & Other Metals Salad Serving Set, Aesthetic Movement (204 g)

$2,200.00
A remarkable late 19th-century Gorham mixed-metal salad serving set, dating to c. 1880 and characteristic of the firm's celebrated Aesthetic Movement production. The set is executed in sterling silver with applied mixed-metal decoration and parcel gilding, creating the sophisticated combination of silver, gilt and contrasting metals for which Gorham's most ambitious work of the period is known. The handles have the hammered, organic character associated with Gorham's early mixed-metal work, while the serving ends are elegantly proportioned for their intended use. The pieces are marked with the Gorham lion-anchor-G trademark and “STERLING & OTHER METALS.” The provenance is particularly interesting. The set was acquired from a descendant of Arthur H. Becker (1894–1980) and his wife, Martha Stokes Becker (1895–1985), of Kulpsville, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. Arthur Becker was the son of Joseph Fox Becker, a German-born Kulpsville clothing manufacturer whose business grew from a men's clothing shop into a manufacturing operation and received a contract to produce Army uniforms during World War I. The Gorham set descended through the Becker family. The set is unmonogrammed, which is particularly desirable for collectors and allows the design to be appreciated without a later owner's initials. A superb example of Gorham's inventive early mixed-metal work, with an unusually appealing Pennsylvania family provenance. Weight: 204 grams Date: Circa 1880 Maker: Gorham Manufacturing Co., Providence, Rhode Island Marks: Lion-anchor-G; STERLING & OTHER METALS Material: Sterling silver, mixed metals, partial gilding Length: Approximately 9¾ inches (spoon) Condition is good with some flattening of the berries noted.
