1890-1910 Sri Lankan Gilt 800 Silver Crescent Necklace with Natural Pink Rubies and Cannetille (44 g)
$280.00
A substantial Sri Lankan crescent necklace, probably dating to around 1900, finely worked in gilt 800 silver with elaborate applied cannetille decoration and six natural pink corundum stones, conventionally described as rubies. The large crescent measures 5¼ inches wide by 2¾ inches high and is suspended from its original-looking hand-fabricated gilt silver chain, terminating in a hand-forged hook-and-eye fastening. The crescent is of unusual five-sided hollow construction, tapering elegantly toward its ends, with the intricate cannetille ornament applied over the surface. The six small stones, approximately 3 mm each, are individually prong set and vary naturally in shades of pink. The entire reverse of the crescent is also gilt.
The necklace retains nearly all of its original gilding, with some natural fading and variation from age and wear. There are small dents and other minor signs of handling to the crescent, consistent with its age. The silver has been XRF tested and is 800 fineness. A particularly fine example of the elaborate gilt-silver jewelry produced in Sri Lanka during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, with its combination of substantial crescent form, finely fabricated chain, hand-forged fastening, natural stones, and unusually intricate cannetille work.
