18th Century French or Italian Neoclassical Heavy Hand-Cast Antique Solid Brass Door Knocker — Architectural Hardware

$425.00
Hand-cast in sand molds and hand-finished, this rare architectural knocker weighs an impressive 1.385 kg (3.05 lbs) and measures 7 inches tall by 4.5 inches wide. The form features a graceful neoclassical baluster handle with a cross-hatched collar ring, mounted to an organic, foliate backplate typical of early French or Italian design. The original hand-peened pivot pin and iron through-bolt remain intact. The surface shows a deep, natural aged patina with touches of verdigris from centuries of oxidation — never polished, retaining the warmth and authenticity of true period hardware. This piece is entirely original, not a reproduction, and makes a striking statement on any solid wood entry door or displayed as an architectural collectible. Condition: Excellent antique condition with genuine age wear. No cracks or repairs. Stable surface patina; functional pivot. Dimensions: 7" H × 4.5" W × approx. 2" projection Weight: 1385 g (3.05 lbs) Material: Cast brass / bronze alloy with forged iron bolt Origin: France or Northern Italy, c. 1780–1820 Mounting: The L-shaped steel or iron bolt is cast into the back of the knocker or passed through a hole in its rear. A matching hole is drilled through the front of the door where the knocker is to be positioned. The long leg of the “L” goes through the door’s thickness to the inside face, while the short leg (at the rear of the knocker) acted as a pivot point or anchor. On the interior side, the long part of the L-bolt is bent flat against the wood, peened over (hammered to expand the end), or fixed with a brace. This makes removal difficult and prevents the knocker from rotating or loosening over time.
