1908-1937 Herbert A Taylor for Arthur Stone 18.75" Hand-Wrought Sterling Silver Tray – Arts & Crafts (1154 g)

$3,400.00
A good hand-wrought sterling silver tray by Arthur Stone, dating to around 1920. Classic Arts & Crafts work with hand hammering throughout and a clean, simple form. The surface shows the expected hand work that gives these Stone pieces their character. Marked to the underside with the Arthur Stone anvil mark and “T” for the craftsman Herbert A. Taylor. Arthur Stone (1847–1938) was one of the leading figures of the American Arts & Crafts movement. Born in Sheffield, England, he immigrated to the United States in 1884 and established his silver workshop in Gardner, Massachusetts in 1901. His shop produced some of the finest hand-wrought silver of the period, and unlike many workshops, Stone allowed the craftsmen who made the pieces to add their own initial alongside the shop mark. The “T” mark identifies Herbert A. Taylor, who worked for Stone from about 1908–1937 and is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished silversmiths in the shop—often described as Stone’s right-hand man. Many important Stone pieces were raised by Taylor before being finished and chased by Stone himself. Good condition overall with light surface scratches from normal use. No monograms.
