1911 Argentine Silver Sarmiento Centenary Medal, El Pueblo de Tandil to Domingo Faustino Sarmiento (16 Grams)

$125.00
A historically significant Argentine commemorative medal issued in 1911 to honor the centenary of the birth of Domingo Faustino Sarmiento (1811–1888), one of the most consequential educators and statesmen in Argentine history. The medal was presented in the name of the people of Tandil to Sarmiento as “Al Maestro de Escuela”—“To the Schoolmaster”—a particularly fitting tribute to the man whose legacy is inseparable from the development of public education in Argentina. The reverse is inscribed “EL PUEBLO DEL TANDIL / AL MAESTRO DE ESCUELA / DOMINGO FAUSTINO SARMIENTO / 1811 15 DE FEBRERO 1911.” The issue is documented in Argentine numismatic references as the 1911 “El Pueblo de Tandil a Sarmiento” medal, catalogued as LGYW and attributed to Horta y Cia. The medal commemorates the first centenary of Sarmiento's birth and belongs to a remarkable series of Argentine medals produced throughout the country for the 1911 centennial. The integral suspension loop makes this example particularly appealing as a wearable historical pendant, while retaining the character of an original early-20th-century commemorative medal. Dimensions: Pendant size; approximately 36 mm Weight: 16 grams Material: Silver Maker: Horta y Cia.
