A handsome vintage sterling silver hinged bangle by W.R. Johnson of Toronto, featuring an unusually broad, hollow-form body decorated throughout the exterior with intricate engraved floral designs. The bracelet has the elegant, substantial appearance of a much heavier solid bangle while remaining relatively light at 44 grams due to its hollow construction.
The bracelet opens on a hinge and closes with a push-button clasp, with the original safety chain now missing. The floral engraving is particularly attractive, covering the broad upper surface with scrolling botanical decoration and giving the piece a distinctly period character. Examples of WRJ sterling jewelry with comparable engraved hinged construction are documented from approximately the 1930s through the 1950s.
Measuring approximately 6½ inches in interior diameter and 1⅛ inches across, this is a substantial yet very wearable example of Canadian sterling jewelry. It remains in very good vintage condition, with the absence of the security chain noted.
