1945 New Hampshire CBR Sterling Silver Beaker, Hand Hammered American Studio Silver, Thunderbird Mark (144 g)

$250.00
A handsome hand-hammered American sterling silver beaker, dated 1945 and bearing the unidentified maker's initials CBR, an NH mark, and a distinctive eagle or thunderbird emblem. The beaker has a particularly pleasing tapered form with a substantial, heavy base, giving it both a refined appearance and a satisfying weight in the hand. The silver is extensively hand hammered, with the irregular surface imparting the characteristic vitality of American studio silver of the period. The construction is straightforward and robust, with the emphasis placed on the quality of the material, workmanship, and form rather than ornament. The underside is clearly marked CBR / 1945 / NH / STERLING, accompanied by the maker's distinctive eagle mark. The maker has not been conclusively identified, although the combination of the 1945 date, New Hampshire designation, hand-wrought construction, and the style of the piece is particularly suggestive of the American craft movement that developed around the Dartmouth School for American Craftsmen, established in Hanover in 1945. That program trained craftsmen in metalworking and other traditional crafts, including a number of wartime veterans, and is an intriguing possible context for this otherwise elusive maker. The same distinctive maker's mark is known on at least one other 1940s New Hampshire sterling vessel, a hand-hammered quaich, suggesting that CBR produced a small body of related work during this period. The maker remains unidentified, making this an especially interesting piece for collectors of American studio silver and the early postwar craft movement. A wonderful example of restrained American hand-wrought silver, with an appealing history still waiting to be fully uncovered. Dimensions: 3.25" x 3" Weight: about 144 grams Volume: 8 ounces Check out some of my other US sterling silver hollowware here: https://www.etsy.com/shop/DCSILVERSHOP?ref=shop_sugg§ion_id=19121632 Pounce on this terrific piece or just browse around the shop! https://www.etsy.com/shop/DCSILVERSHOP
