1950 Colon Bijagó Maternity Figure from Guinea-Bissau

$300.00
This is a scarce old (ca 1950) female Bijogo (Bidjogo) colonial maternity figure. Figure is in polychrome with faded red, yellow, brown, and black. Wearing a cross necklace, bracelets, and perhaps a strip of fabric above the knee. Distressed areas from use and age: a few rubs to the paint and a repair to the infant's right foot, slight chip to infant's coiffure. About 17.5" tall and light, carved of a soft wood. Carved in Bissagos Islands, Guinea-Bissau by a Bijogo artist. Provenance: collection of John B. Schlaes. Browse around the shop! http://www.etsy.com/shop/neurorocker
