1950's Taxco Sterling Silver Hand Forged Ice Tongs (98 g)
$600.00
A rare large pair of hand forged Taxco sterling silver ice tongs. A bold and substantial pair of Taxco sterling silver ice tongs, dating to the mid-20th century and bearing the Mexican Eagle 23 assay mark. At 98 grams and a generous 9.5 inches long, these are large, well-balanced tongs with excellent presence and a strong architectural profile.
The arms are sharply faceted with crisp planes, terminating in sculptural, stylized gripping ends—an expressive and functional design typical of quality Taxco silver made for both domestic use and export during the postwar period. These feel solid in the hand and were clearly made to be used.
Marked STERLING and Eagle 23, confirming post-1948 Mexican government assay.
According to Bille Hougart's book on Mexican marks, Eagle 23 is associated with several makers and workshops, including:
ATE
Bernice I. Goodspeed
Gerardo López
Estela Popowski
LS
MG
AE (inside a heart-shaped M)
As this example does not carry a readable maker’s stamp beyond the Eagle mark, a specific attribution is difficult. Nevertheless, the weight, execution, and sculptural quality place it firmly among well-made Taxco silver of the period.
Condition is excellent as shown.
