A substantial vintage Afghan silver ring featuring a beautifully carved carnelian (ʿaqīq / aqeeq) intaglio with the Arabic devotional inscription which is believed to read: علي ولي الله Ali Wali Allah “Ali is the Wali of Allah.” The inscription refers to Imam Ali and is associated with Shia Islamic devotional tradition. The ring has a substantial, hand-worked silver mounting with an aged patina and traditional decorative detailing. The large orange-red carnelian has the characteristic translucent depth associated with fine ʿaqīq and is carved directly with the Arabic inscription.
